Not all of us have the opportunity to walk around military bases, which is why abandoned ones are an excellent opportunity for a new experience. Although the base also has a barracks complex, Željava is the most interesting because of its runways and tunnels, and the top influencer spot is the old Douglas C47 plane.

Be sure to bring a headlamp so you can explore the tunnels, which are my favorite part of the base, especially when it's hot in the summer. The tunnel system is not too complex and is clearly visible on the map below, so make a printscreen because there is no a mobile signal inside. Who would have guessed it?

The entrances to the tunnels were mined when the JNA withdrew from the base, so you can see how thick the steel reinforcement is, which was very interesting for me as an architect. Definitely an interesting place to explore. Here is an interesting short film filmed in the base in the seventies and I recommend you watch it before your visit.

By the way, the real name of the base is "Klek objekt 505".
